COMFREY Benefits and Recipes

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a time-honored herbal remedy known for its powerful ability to support healing. Often called “knitbone,” it has been used for centuries to help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue repair. Today, it’s widely used in topical products and even valued in organic gardening.

TOP BENEFITS OF COMFREY:

Natural Pain & Inflammation Relief
Comfrey is commonly used in creams and salves to ease muscle aches, joint pain, sprains, and even osteoarthritis. Its anti-inflammatory compounds help reduce swelling and discomfort quickly.

Supports Wound & Tissue Healing
Rich in allantoin, comfrey helps stimulate skin cell regeneration. This makes it especially effective for bruises, minor injuries, and supporting faster recovery of damaged tissue.

Soothes & Protects Skin
Comfrey works as a natural emollient, helping to hydrate dry, irritated skin while calming redness and inflammation. It’s often included in skincare products for sensitive or damaged skin.

Powerful Garden Booster
Beyond its medicinal uses, comfrey is a favorite among gardeners. It acts as a “dynamic accumulator,” pulling nutrients like potassium and nitrogen from deep soil layers. Its leaves are perfect for compost, mulch, or nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer.

Important Safety Guidelines

Do NOT ingest comfrey – it contains toxic compounds (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) that can cause serious liver damage.

Avoid applying to open or deep wounds – it may heal skin too quickly and trap infection.

Use short-term only – prolonged use can lead to buildup of harmful compounds.

Not recommended for pregnant women or young children without medical guidance.

Best Way to Use Comfrey

For safe and effective results, use commercially prepared comfrey creams or salves designed specifically for external use. These are formulated to deliver benefits while minimizing risk.

Comfrey Melt & Pour Healing Soap

Best for: soothing dry skin, gentle cleansing, calming irritation

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 lb melt & pour soap base (goat milk or shea butter works great)
  • 1–2 tbsp comfrey-infused oil (use dried herb infusion only)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut soap base into cubes and melt in a microwave (30-second intervals) or double boiler until fully liquid.

Stir in your comfrey-infused oil. This gives the soap its soothing properties.

Add ground comfrey leaf, essential oil, and vitamin E. Stir gently to combine.
